Organisations seeking approval for qualifications or Apprenticeships

The professional engineering institutions will consider nationally available qualifications and Apprenticeships for approval. They will consider private provision, such as that operated through a company training programme.

Nationally available qualifications may focus on education, ie the underpinning knowledge and understanding, or the development of competence, or include both of these.

Approved qualifications or Apprenticeship programmes for technician registration meet some or all of the Engineering Council’s requirements for the award of Engineering Technician (EngTech) or Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)Logos to denote approved status are available for downloading.  Approved qualifications are listed here.

Information about the requirements for registration is available here

If you are developing a knowledge focused qualification

Your principal reference point is the Engineering Council’s learning outcomes for technicians.  You will find this and details of the approval process, the evidence required and next steps in  ‘Approval of knowledge-based  qualifications and programmes for technician (EngTech and ICTTech) registration’ at the bottom of this page.

If you are developing a competence only qualification undertaken in the workplace

Your principal reference point is the Engineering Council’s standards of competence and commitment that individuals must demonstrate in order to achieve professional registration.

  • The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) for EngTech
  • The Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech) Standard

If you are developing a qualification or Apprenticeship that integrates underpinning knowledge and understanding with the development of competence in the workplace

You will need to refer to both the learning outcomes and the standards of competence and commitment, UK-SPEC or ICTTech.  You will find details about the approval process, the evidence required and next steps in ‘Approval of qualifications and Apprenticeships for technician (EngTech and ICTTech) registration’ at the bottom of this page.

This will also be of help if you are developing Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4 and above) leading to IEng or CEng registration.  The learning outcomes, exemplifying academic qualifications and standards of competence for IEng and CEng registration is available separately.

The advantages of approval to the provider, employers and individuals are set out in each of the documents below.
